Multiculturalism

CLASS 2

Diversity and unity has been used in a variety of ways (descriptive and normative sense). In addition to this, multiculturalism is an ideological “space” rather than a political ideology in its own right, is an arena in which increasingly important debates take place about the balance in modern societies between cultural diversity and civic unity. As a result, multiculturalism is a form of identity politics. Identity, in this sense, connects the individual to society, to culture, and regards the individual as being “embedded” in a particular cultural, social, institutional or ideological context.

Glossary:

  • Multiculturalism: can be identified in the following themes: postcolonialism, identity and culture, minority rights and diversity. And multiculturalism itself can be seen as one of the seeds of postcolonialism.
  • Descriptive Multiculturalism: it refers to cultural diversity resulting from the existence in society of two or more groups.
  • Normative Multiculturalism:  this implies an active adherence, even a celebration, of community diversity, often based on the right to respect and recognition of different cultural groups.
  • Identity and culture: connects the individual to society, to culture, and regards the individual as being “embedded” in a particular cultural, social, institutional or ideological context.
